COURSE OF STUDIES & EXAMINATION

The Courses, curricula and examinations for the Degree of M.B.B.S. and B.D.S. are governed by the rules and regulations of the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council currently enforced as amended from time to time and as adopted by the respective universities.

2. The Courses of studies for M.B.B.S. , normally extend to a period of five academic years while for B.D.S. four years. The year wise breakup of teaching main courses and subjects of, and conducting examinations of MBBS and BDS shall be as follows:-

M.B.B.S. COURSES

(I) First Year:
a)Anatomy and Histology
b) Physiology
c) Biochemistry
d) Pakistan Studies and Islamiat
e) Community Medicine
f) Behavioral Sciences
At the end of first year, First Professional part-I university examination will be held in the course work completed in first year in following subjects:-
(a) Anatomy & Histology
(b) Physiology
(c) Biochemistry.
(d) Pakistan Studies & Islamiat.

(II) Second Year:
Teaching of all subjects mentioned under first year will continue and First Professional Part-II, university examination will be conducted in the course work completed in the second year in the following subjects:
(a) Anatomy and Histology
(b) Physiology
(c) Biochemistry.

(III) Third Year:
(a) Pharmacology and Therapeutics
(b) General Pathology, Microbiology & Parasitology
(c) Forensic Medicine.

(IV) Fourth Year:
(a) Community Medicine
(b) Systemic Pathology

(V) Final Year:
(a) Medicine including Psychiatry and Dermatology
(b) Surgery including Orthopaedics and Anaesthesiology
(c) Obstetrics and Gynaecology
(d) Paediatrics including Neonatology
(e) Otorhinolaryngology (E.N.T.)
(f) Ophthalmology. (EYE)


Keeping in view the general educational objectives of P.M & D.C. and in accordance with directives of Government of Pakistan, the course at Medical Colleges in Sindh would be Community Orientated with emphasis on integration & adoption of holistic approach.

B.D.S. COURSES

(I) First Year:
a) Anatomy, Neuro-anatomy , Histology and Embryology
b) Physiology including Biochemistry.
c) Sciences of Dental Materials & Laboratory Techniques.

(II) Second Year:
a) General & Dental Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
b) General Pathology and Bacteriology.
c) Oral Anatomy, Physiology, Histology and Tooth Morphology.

(III) Third Year :-
a) Medicine.
b) Surgery.
c) Oral Pathology, Histo-pathology and Microbiology.
d) Oral diagnosis , Oral Medicine.

(IV) Final Year:-
a) Prosthetics and Prosthodontics.
b) Operative / Restorative / Conservative Dentistry.
c) Orthodontics.
d) Oral Surgery, Anaesthesia, Forensic Medicine, Toxicology,
Medical Ethics, Dental practice, Management.

3. At the end of the each year there will be a university examination.

4. The first two years are devoted to the pre-clinical subjects and the clinical teaching / training starts from third year. The students start going to the hospital for clinical work from their third year onwards.

5. Subject to para 3 no student will be promoted to the next higher class unless he/she passes all the subjects of the professional university examination as laid down in the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council rules. There will be no carry over system and there will be no extra supplementary examinations.

6. No student shall be permitted to appear in any examination unless he/she has attended 75% of the lectures, demonstrations, tutorials, practical, and clinical work.

7. Such candidates who are not allowed to appear in any examination may, however, be permitted to appear at the next examination, if they attend the requisite number of the lectures and practicals as per rules of the University concerned.

8. Any student who fails to clear the First Professional Part-I & Part-II MBBS / First Professional BDS examination in three chances each availed or un-availed under any circumstances shall cease to be eligible for further medical or dental education, respectively.

9. Three years at least shall intervene between the dates of passing the 1st Professional Examination in Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry and of admission to the Final Examination in medicine, Surgery, (Ophthalmology, Disease of the Ear, Nose and Throat, etc) Obstetrics & Gynecology .

10.There shall not be more than two examinations in a year. The month of examination shall be fixed by the University which shall be strictly followed.
